Some Sad News:

It is with great regret that I have to inform you that our former member Mike Rosser passed away on Tuesday 30th September
Mike joined the Club in 1985 and was a very popular member who played regularly at G&S for many years. Mike was a single figure golfer and was the long standing captain of the A/B team, through which he got to know many of the members.
Mike will be remembered for his relaxed manner and wonderful sense of humour.
Mike had been suffering from poor health for a while and suspended his membership on medical grounds in 2012 before finally leaving the Club last year.
I am sure that many of Mike’s friends at the Club will wish to attend the funeral, so I will inform you of the arrangements as soon as possible.

It is also with great regret that I have to inform you that our member John Berry passed away at the weekend.
John joined Goring & Streatley Golf Club in June 1966 and had many good friends at the Golf Club who will be very saddened by this news.

As soon as I have details of John’s funeral arrangements I will publish them.

Our thoughts are with both John and Mike's family at this time.

Seeded Divots:

Golfers are reminded that in 2010 the R&A withdrew the facility for golf clubs to establish a local rule giving relief from seeded divots and the ball must be played as it lies.
However we would request that in casual play common sense should prevail and relief should be taken.

President's Day

Dear Members,

I always knew my third year as your President would be special but did not realise it would be so different and special.

On Thursday 31st. August there was Ladies President’s Day. The weather was perfect and the standard of golf matched it. Melinda Martin came 3rd. with 41 points but in 2nd. place came Sharon Milligan also with 41 points but with a better back 9. In fact Sharon who has only been playing for a couple of years, played, that day, her very best round ever and so came down from 36 to 34 handicap. The winner, playing off 20, was Sheila Cork with a magnificent 45 points.

Two days later it was the turn of the men. 144 men braced themselves for battle but as those 144 men will remember about
mid- day the heavens opened and sadly the competition had to be abandoned. Nevertheless the President’s Dinner went ahead and I am sure that the 100 plus who attended enjoyed the excellent food provided by Head Chef Chris and his team and the excellent comedian who entertained us. I was so pleased to have as my special guest Rita Mason that evening.

Two days later was the Junior’s President Day and it was won by Chris McCleery with a splendid 77 net 65. Here again there was nearly a problem because the storm hooter had to be sounded when a brief thunderstorm passed by.

Now to the rearranged President’s Day competition. Again the entry totalled 144 but this time the weather was perfect and 44 players had 36 or more points. Being the sort of Club we are I wanted the Competition to be inclusive which is why I gave a prize to the best over 70 year old – on 41 points George Pullen only beat Terry Gallagher on the back 9. There was also a prize for the best score by a player with a handicap of 20 +. That was won by Robert Lester with 37 points playing off 22 BUT see later.

It looked as if one of our Junior members Max Stradling with 44 points, playing off 7, would win but in the very last group a winning score of 45 was produced. Andrew Norris only joined the Club earlier this year and had been awarded an initial handicap of 28 following the submission of his required three cards. In his first main competition he had a good round and had his handicap reduced to 26. In future, after his 45 points, he will be playing off 20 ! What a great start to his membership and like Sharon Milligan in the Ladies competition had the round of his life ---- so far.

To all members, Ladies, Men and Juniors thank you so much for supporting me on and off the course for the past 2 ½ years. I do have a few more duties to undertake before my time is up but it is you and our super Club that has made my time as your President so memorable, enjoyable and so very special.

Best wishes to everyone,
Bill Harrison.
